Building Information Modeling Strategies

Course Description

Students will explore various software tools and concepts used for Building Information Modeling. This is includes and is not limited to the use of Revit,Grasshopper, and other Analytical tools. The future of building will rely heavily on our abilities to define digital relationships that facilitate efficient construction processes and energy efficient buildings. This course will not entirely be based on exploitation of a digital tool to produce standardized construction documents; it will also teach a methodology of implementing digital tools to produce specific interrelated results. Primary focus will rest on parametric and family based digital design principles as defined by the software as well as utilization of internal database structures of the Revit SoftwarePlatform. Other Software platforms will be explored at the discretion of the Instructor.

    Course Structure

    The course will be divided between a lecture session and a lab session each week. All students will meet together for lecture and lab sessions will be broken into smaller sections. Each week work will be assigned and due at the beginning of the lab session. Lab sessions will involve group discussion and critique of the work produced for that week. Lab discussions will critically examine the agendas of the course and the work in the form of tutorials and one on one help sessions.

    There will be a select number of mandatory readings or websites to visit, and where appropriate additional optional texts or areas of investigation encouraged. A support system of tutorials + training media will be available for students to advance their usage of software. It is expected that this training will be necessary for all students regardless of incoming aptitude or skill sets. Evaluation of students will not be explicitly tied to the completion of this training, though assignments will demand the utilization of a variety of techniques which will be the responsibility of the students to exercise accordingly
